Hair Transplant for Women
A hair transplant for women is not a risky procedure. Because it uses your own hair follicles, you will not feel any pain during or after the procedure, and no scars remain in the area where follicles are harvested.
As with any medical treatment, it is important to have your hair transplant in the right place. Before having a hair transplant, choose your hospital or clinic carefully. Having the procedure performed in a clean, hygienic environment by an experienced specialist is essential to preventing problems later on.
Is a Hair Transplant for Women Different from One for Men?
In hair transplants for men, the hair is usually shaved completely. This makes it easier to harvest donor follicles and perform the transplant in the best possible way. For women, however, shaving the entire head raises understandable aesthetic concerns.
That is why the area does not need to be shaved for women. Instead, follicles are usually harvested by opening a small, specific area at the back of the head. In this respect, the procedure is different from that for men.
How Is a Hair Transplant for Women Performed?
Hair transplants for women are generally performed using the FUE technique. Carried out under local anaesthesia, the procedure is painless. The hair to be transplanted is usually harvested from the back of the head, and the donor follicles are then implanted one by one into the areas affected by hair loss, creating an elegant, natural look. The procedure takes 6 to 8 hours and is completed in a single session: harvesting the follicles takes about 3–4 hours, and opening the channels and implanting the grafts takes another 3–4 hours.
After the procedure, you will be asked to come back for dressing as instructed by your doctor. Your hair should be washed carefully 3 days after the procedure. Some swelling may appear around the forehead in the first week, and redness and scabbing may occur at the back of the head; both fade over time. Most patients return to work within about 10 days.
What Should You Pay Attention to After a Hair Transplant?
Avoid heavy physical activity for 3 days after the procedure. Hair care products should not come into contact with your hair for 15 days. During this period, it is very important to use the creams, lotions and shampoos recommended by your doctor. If you follow your doctor’s instructions, your hair will grow back healthier and faster.
After the procedure, the treated area should not be exposed to direct sunlight, as it is very sensitive. It is also important never to pick at any scabs that form. If you notice any change in colour or other differences in your hair, contact the clinic without delay.
